Issue 18 6 November 2024
From the Principal's Desk
Welcome to week 7
The weather certainly has warmed up lately, so please remember to send your children in with a large bottle of water, chilled or even frozen. Our recommendation is to filter and/or boil your water as we've had an uptick in belly bugs lately, possibly due to the water. Hydration is absolutely key for good brain function and this hot weather can very quickly drain the tank. Having a wide-brim, sun-smart hat is also a must in this weather. Our tuckshop sells school hats, which are high-quality, durable and very smart looking. They would be the preferred option.
In great news for our school, we have been successful in securing funding to have a new filtration system installed on our drinking fountains, which should occur over the holidays. We will secure funding for an upgrade of our Senior amenities block in 2025 to the tune of $700 000. In the new year we will begin work on refurbishing our tired old basketball courts into two multipurpose play areas - one hardcourt and one turf, which will be secured with a new fence and new draining works.
Lots of time and energy is being put into beautifying our play environments, with our groundsman, Paul, doing an excellent job since coming on board with our team at KSS. If you're up for some gardening action, our new school garden is really taking shape. Pop down to the prep area near the yarning circle to check it out. If anyone out there can help with mulching, weeding, or any other garden activities, please just pop in - there's always something to do and we have all the gear you need ready to go. We may be having a working bee before the end of the year to get some colour into the garden.
Have you heard about our Shining Stars Playgroup? It happens every Thursday and has become an instant success, with lots of new families coming each week. Follow Shining Starts Playgroup here...
Class News from 6R
What an incredible start to the term we’ve had!
This term has been packed with excitement and learning, especially for our Year 6 students. In Science, we’ve been investigating the fascinating world of microorganisms. With our moulding bread experiment, we’ve explored places to store bread and even expanded to germs on different surfaces. Science has definitely come to life in the classroom this term!
In English, we’ve been creating persuasive PowerPoint presentations, aiming to convince our audience to visit a holiday destination. Some include Tallebudgerra, Miami, Tinaroo, Gold Coast and Korea.
In Maths, we’ve begun diving into data and graphs. A skill that will be further extended when we transfer our mould data and analyse the results.
Looking ahead, there’s so much excitement in store! At the top of the list, there’s the graduation and End of Year concert, both of which are fast approaching. Our Year 6 students are looking forward to their high school transition days in November—an exciting step into Year 7!
It has been a joy to see 6R’s growth, teamwork, and achievements this year.

Student Council, Recycling and New Garden News
Student Council shared a video to remind us all about the Christmas Food Drive. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this in order to help families in the region. Thank you to the members of student council who have been leading this very worthwhile cause.
We had our recycling grand draw last week. Recycling keeps containers out of landfill, teaches students about caring for the planet and raises money for the school. Congratulations to the classes who are collecting containers! Well done to raffle winners and many thanks to everyone who has brought in recycling.
Weeks 5 and 6 have been our biggest weeks yet for the garden. After 5 weeks of the Green Team filling the garden beds with soil, they were finally ready to start planting. The irrigation was set up by a community member who donated his time. Plants were donated too. We are very grateful to Memerambi Springs, school families, teachers and community members. The Whipbird café also has some seedlings for us. Each year level has a garden bed and each class has their own section of the bed. Some students planted with Mrs Ayling and Mrs Watson during their classes, some planted in the afternoon sessions and others planted during break time. Special thanks also to the Green Team staff for giving up their lunch times. The amazing news is that seeds planted in week 5 are already sprouting! Check out all the sunflowers coming up along the fence line near the basketball courts.
Thank you also to Kylie Grainger who came to help one lunch time. A small group of students were invited to the High School by Mrs George to see their gardens. She gave us a great tour and inspired our students to go bigger. Thank you Mrs George! On Thursday this week we look forward to welcoming Romaine from Ramesa Nursery. Romaine will visit the new gardens and chat to some of the students about them.

Kingaroy State High School Visit
Mrs George from Kingaroy State High School recently invited a small group of dedicated Green Team students to explore the school's gardens. The students had the opportunity to tour the extensive garden beds, visit the cattle and chickens, and view the newly established seedling area, seed planting drill, and yarning circle. Inspired by their visit, the students extended an invitation for Mrs George to return and see the exciting new developments in our own gardens.

We are still collecting for the Christmas Food Drive. This is a combined community drive with Bill Hull Car Centre being the driving force. Hampers will be packaged and distributed by South Burnett CTC Inc and Eva's Place Kingaroy helping many families out. Please send your donations in!
