Issue 10 19 June 2024
From the Principal's Desk
To our wonderful school community, thanks for an amazing Term 2, my first at Kingaroy SS. We have achieved a lot over the term, including on the sporting fields and in classrooms and of course with our community engagement. ANZAC Day, Athletics Carnival, Nanango Show, Rugby League Gala Day and Winter Sports all come to mind, along with our Partnerships Committee gearing up for NAIDOC on July 12. I'm looking forward to our upcoming huge raffle draw #2 on Thursday. We've had great success with our Wave of Change program, raising over $1500. A big thank you to Miranda Nicholson for leading this work, and to everyone who has brought their containers into school.
This term has also seen some staffing changes. Kim Turner has accepted a teaching position at Coolabunia State School for the remainder of the year. Genevieve West is her replacement. We wish Kim all the very best and thank her for her work here at Kingaroy State School over the past 4 or so years. As well as teaching, Kim has played a lead role in our PBL Team and will be dearly missed.
Mrs Deb Smith will be taking some extended leave in Term 3, ahead of her retirement. Deb has been at KSS 'forever' I'm told, and we will all miss her smile and commitment to our little ones.
Graeme our groundsman is on extended leave until at least Term 4, replaced by Paul Bales, who brings much skill and enthusiasm to the role.
Ahead of our winter break, may I wish you all a safe holiday and look forward to seeing you back at school on July 8 for Term 3.

From the Deputy Principal
It is hard to believe we have reached the end of Term 2. There is still lots happening around the school with our Rewards Parade, Containers for Change Celebrations and Showcase Display. Our PBL focus for Week 9 and 10 has been Calm Classrooms and students have been practising mindfulness.
Showcase Display – Please feel free to visit the Sports Hall to have a look at the exciting, engaging, hands-on learning experiences your children have been part of this term. It is fantastic to see the quality of work students are producing. We are so proud of their achievements.

NAIDOC Celebrations - We are really excited about our NAIDOC Celebrations which will be happening Week 1 of next term. If any of our Indigenous Families are able to assist with rotations on the day, please let us know. Our Indigenous Leaders have been busy helping Mrs Brazier get the NAIDOC display ready in the library.
Adopt-a-Cop Nick – We were fortunate enough to have a visit from Constable Nick this fortnight. He spoke to our Year 4, 5 and 6 students about a number of issues students their age are facing. It was great to see how engaged the students were and hear the thoughtful questions they asked Constable Nick.
Year 1 Fire Safety Visit
Students in Years P/1L, 1D and 1M have participated in Fire Education visits over the last two weeks. Members of the local Fire and Emergency Services team came to our school and shared their knowledge with the students on fire safety topics including;
- Good verse bad fires
- Dialling 000 in an emergency
- Dangers of fire and smoke
- What to do in a fire – practising stop, drop and roll as well as get down low and go, go, go
- Importance of knowing their home address and meeting place
Yesterday, the Fire and Emergency Services team brought one of their Fire Trucks to Kingaroy State School. The students were very excited as they got to learn about the various equipment stored around the truck and how each item can be used in an emergency. They also got to climb into the truck and explore its different features, hear the siren and watch the flashing lights and each have a go at operating the fire hose!
A big thank you to the Kingaroy Fire Station for providing these educational, engaging and very important fire safety lessons.

A huge congratulations to Russell House who were the overall winners of the carnival.
Envelopes will come home after holidays.
Student Council News
We had our final student council meeting of the term today. It was a great opportunity for the class representatives to come together to share their ideas about how to spend the money raised by the recycling.
During the meeting, students broke into groups to discuss their chosen topics ranging from improving the gardens, school facilities and the sports facilities. Representatives from different year levels contributed their perspectives and ideas.
Key highlights included ideas for murals in the toilet block, purchasing NRL posts for the senior ovals and gardening ideas for the spaces around the school. At the end of the meeting students from each group summarised what was discussed (see photos).
Students are encouraged to get involved by sharing their ideas with their class representative. They were offered the opportunity to begin to create designs for the murals and do further research on inspirational quotes to be used.
