Issue 6 24 April 2024
From the Principal's Desk
Welcome to Term 2! As I mentioned in my email last week, I'm truly excited and grateful to be part of such a wonderful school community. The whole staff at our school are committed to caring for and educating your children here at Kingaroy State School, and in my chats at the school gate with parents it is apparent that you are passionate about Kingaroy SS - the best school in Queensland. Some of the areas I will be focusing on of course are Literacy, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) and Attendance. At the moment our attendance rate is hovering between 80-82%, which is on average a day off per week per child. Aside from illness (never send a sick child to school) or other valid reason, children are required to attend school daily. Having a day off per week means missing out on 20% of the learning opportunities that our dedicated teachers spend time preparing. Remember, EVERY DAY COUNTS.
One of the key features I love about our school are our expectations, focussing on RESPECT. Where I have most recently come from, the beautiful Torres Strait, they have the concept of 'gud pasin', which could be loosely translated to 'good person' - someone who always shows respect, is kind and considerate of others. I'm big on respect, so this alignment with our school values and expectations is both familiar and encouraging.
I was also really excited to learn that our school is a Containers for Change school. This week we launched a new initiative, Wave for Change, aimed at recycling as many containers as possible through our school, with money raised going towards providing resources to help our students learn. Wednesday was our first official collection day, and as the attached photo shows, we have had an amazing response! Each child who returns a bag of eligible containers will receive 5 tickets in a huge raffle draw in weeks 5 and 10, with one of the prizes a $25 Big W voucher, plus lots of other awesome prizes up for grabs.
Finally from me, this week we acknowledge our ANZACs, the servicemen and women who helped defend our nation and our allies so that we have the freedoms we enjoy today. Locally, hundreds of men and women have left our district to risk their lives and we remember them especially at this time.
From the Deputy Principal
A warm welcome back to all our families. I hope you had a relaxing Easter Break and are ready for a busy Term 2.
This week’s focus is "Playing in the correct area", with students who are meeting this expectation receiving $5 Kingaroy Cash. Last week students did an exceptional job of demonstrating the 3Rs and working on smooth classroom and whole school transitions. Students are also to be congratulated on again conquering the Silo Challenge! Next week, students will be rewarded with a 15-minute play for reaching the target number of peanuts.
There are lots of WOWs available for students to sign up for this term. Please discuss these with your students and encourage them to take their well-earned Kingaroy Cash to the office and purchase a WOW.
P&C Meeting - Our first P&C meeting of the term is happening tonight at 6pm in the library. We have a great P&C team who actively support our school. We are always looking for new people to be involved with this committee, all parents and community members are invited to come along, be part of our P&C and meet and welcome our new Principal, Mr Rick Cass, to Kingaroy State School.
Partnership Committee Meeting – Our next Partnership Committee meeting will be held on Monday 29 April at 3.30pm at the Stage. We are super excited to have Mayor Duff and Councillor Potter joining us.
Cherbourg Regional Aboriginal and Islander Community Controlled Health Services (CRAICCHS) Permission Forms – We are extremely fortunate to have CRAICCHS conducting Health Assessments for students who are enrolled at Kingaroy State School. Consent forms have been sent home with eligible students. If you would like your child to receive a health assessment, please fill in the consent form and complete the health questionnaire about any issues or concerns and return the form to the office.
Recycling News
We are very lucky to have received free recycling bags for every student in the school from Wave of Change program. Please label the bag with you child’s name and class. When your students have collected 50 items or a full bag of containers, please send them into school on a Wednesday. Students should put the whole bag into or near the recycling bins, located near the bike rack. On Wednesday last session a team will collect the bags and return the bags to the owners. Students who bring in a full bag of containers will receive 5 raffle tickets in a huge prize draw! In Weeks 5 and Week 10, there will be a prize draw at assembly where students can win a $25 voucher plus lots of chances to win smaller prizes from the prize pool. This will include tuckshop vouchers, handballs and other sports gear, hats and lots more! Other prizes will be given for the best collectors. If you would like to donate new items for the raffle, simply send to the office. For example, the next time you’re at a ‘dollar store’, you might want to choose something to donate, such as colour pens or pencils.
Students can collect these containers at home to bring to school. Please remove lids and straws and rinse containers. Only containers with the ‘10c’ logo are accepted – please check each container. Be very careful with glass containers.
Families may instead use their bag to collect at home and take directly to the recycling depot. You may use the school ID (C10139926) to donate the money to school. If you don’t wish to participate in the program, simply return to the bag to school or keep at home for your own recycling.
Thank you for supporting this exciting new initiative at our school.
Class News with 3M
What a fantastic start 3M have had to Term 2 😊
We have been eagerly learning our times tables with making arrays and times tables handball!
In English, there are so many athletes to pick from. This fortnight we have learnt alot about Lionel Messi! Did you know he started playing at 8years old! Learning to write paragraphs is tricky but knowing it should be like a delicious hamburger makes it a little easier :)
Here are some photos from last term.
Around our School
The Great Silo Challenge
Our target for our next whole school reward is 50 Peanuts collected in our Silo. We are almost there – 47 Peanuts collected, so only 3 to go. A class is rewarded with a peanut when the whole class is caught following the School Expectations. When a class has collected 10 peanuts, they can add a peanut to the Silo. Once we reach 50 Peanuts in the silo, the whole school will have extra playtime.
Word of the Week
The first 2 weeks of Term are almost complete so we have had 2 words of the week. This term there are 3 levels of words for students to explore. Students are encouraged to use the words in sentences when speaking. Students are able to email me their sentences on wfair3@eq.edu.au . Kingaroy Cash is available for students who write a sentence and hand it to me or email me a sentence.
