From the Principal's Desk
Welcome to Week 6!
Parent-Teacher Interviews
This week parent/teacher interviews are happening right across our school. I highly encourage parents and carers to meet with their child’s teacher during our twice-annual parent/teacher interviews. This year we are trialling a new online booking system, hopefully parents find this is a quicker and more convenient way to book their interviews. If you have any feedback about our new online booking system, please give this to your child’s teacher so we can gauge whether we continue with this system into the future.
Bullying No Way Day!
This Friday 18th August is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. Kingaroy State School supports this day every year. This is a free-dress day, students and staff are encouraged to wear orange to show their support for this event.
Debbie Hails Retirement
I would like to acknowledge Debbie Hails’ recent retirement from the Department of Education after 42 years of exemplary service. Debbie Hails’ contribution to this school has been immense, she was Principal for over nine years and then supervised KSS Principals as an Assistant Regional Director for a further 10 years. Debbie Hails is the epitome of professionalism and integrity and our school owes a great debt to her for her outstanding service over so many years. Debbie Hails will continue to support our school into the future as part of her involvement with the Rotary Club, who staff and resource our Breakfast Club before school to ensure our learners can achieve their best. On behalf of the entire KSS community I would like to sincerely thank Debbie Hails for her contribution to our school and wish her the very best for her retirement.
School Opinion Survey
All parents will have received a reminder email from the Department to complete their annual School Opinion Survey. I strongly encourage all parents to complete this survey. Your feedback is important and every year we use information from the School Opinion Survey to help shape the school’s improvement agenda into the future.
School Uniforms
It has been great to see the vast majority of our students wearing their full school uniform to school every day. This includes dark blue jumpers and jackets when it’s colder. School uniforms are available from Coppards, Lowes and Uniform Zone and dark blue jumpers, jackets and shorts are also available from other local shops such as Big W and Best and Less. I discourage parents sending their children to school in brightly coloured jumpers and jackets, these are best worn after school, on weekends and on free-dress days.
From the Deputy Principal
This week’s focus of the fortnight is “On time, Every time”. We have been incentivising being on time for class after breaks with students by rewarding them with $5 Kingaroy Cash. It has been super impressive to see how many classes are in and learning before the final bell rings. Please congratulate your students on being so punctual and showing such great Respect for Learning. We have also achieved our “Whole School Peanut Challenge”. This means our students’ hard work has paid off and they will be rewarded for following our school expectations by having 10 minutes extra play! There are lots of WOW’s still to come. Please encourage your students to sign up for a WOW of their choice this fortnight. The posters below detail what is happening during Weeks 7 and 8.
Fudooka Visit – Our recent visit from Fudooka High School in Japan was an amazing success. This visit is an integral part of our school's Japanese program, providing extension and exposure to a whole new world for many of our students. Students across our entire school had the opportunity to be immersed in Japanese culture and to connect with new friends. Mrs Carige, with the help of her daughter, created our guests their very own SILO the peanut to take home. A huge congratulations to Ms Kate Ireland and Mrs Danielle Carige for their exceptional organisation and the success of the visit.
Fudooka Visit
Science Week – We were fortunate enough to have Mr Jamie Shirlaw, the Science Head of Department from Kingaroy State High School, come and visit our Year 5 and 6 students as part of Science Week. He did a number of engaging experiments with our students that ignited a love of science in many of them. A huge thank you to Jamie for offering his time and to Miss Sarah Brookes for her organisation of such a successful Science Week.

Class News - Prep T
What a busy but exciting term 3 we've been having in Prep T! After starting the term with our one hundredth day of school and under 8's day celebrations, we were lucky enough to have some Japanese students from Fudooka High School visit the classroom. In this time we had fun playing some traditional Japanese games and learning what school in Japan is like.
We are also still working hard to solve rhymes as we try to catch the Rhyme Crime Thief as part of our English unit. He has been stealing things across the school and replacing them with things that rhyme! We can’t wait to see what the rest of term 3 will bring for Prep T.

Question: What is the hardest substance in the human body?
Answer: Tooth enamel - it's even harder than bone, but unlike bone, it can't renew/ repair itself.
Last week was Dental Health Week. Miss Smith delivered a lesson to all classes about dental health and learned the following key points:
- brush your teeth every morning after breakfast and every night before bed
- parents should help children brush until they are 8
- use fluoride toothpaste
- floss
- spit the toothpaste out after brushing but don't rinse it out because the fluoride in the toothpaste can help your tooth enamel stay strong
All children received a toothbrush, sample toothpaste and an information chart. Thanks to Mrs Reilly for organising these from Colgate.
