Issue 6 26 April 2023
From the Principal's Desk
ANZAC Day:
Thank you to all the students who were involved with our school’s ANZAC Day parade which was held on Monday 24th April. This is an important annual event and it was great to be able to commemorate this day with all students and staff. It was great to see many students and their parents participate in the community march which happened yesterday. This is a very important event in our town’s calendar and it was fantastic to see the Kingaroy State School community supporting it so strongly.
P&C meeting:
Our next P&C Meeting is happening tonight, at 5.30pm in the library. All parents and community members are invited to attend.
Warm clothes:
With winter fast approaching the mornings are getting colder. Please ensure that your child is wearing clothing that is appropriate for the temperature. Kingaroy State School jumpers are available for purchase at Coppards, however students can wear any suitable warm clothes to ensure they can keep warm. Please label any warm clothes with your child’s name so that they can be easily returned if misplaced as they are often removed later in the day when it gets warmer.
From the Deputy Principal
A warm welcome back to all our families. I hope you had a relaxing Easter Break and are ready for a busy Term 2.
Nature Playground – Our students were so excited to return this term to find some new play areas to explore and, for our senior students, a lovely new eating area. Our natural play spaces have been a real asset to our school and have been encouraging our students to collaborate with each other improving social skills and encouraging problem-solving. In addition to encouraging children to spend more time outdoors, these playgrounds increase health and motor skill development. It has been fantastic watching our students being challenged through physical play elements such as boulders and tree stumps, increasing their strength and balance. A huge thank you to our P&C for all the hard work they have put in over the last 12 months to make this a reality. Thank you also to all the families who gave up their time on the holidays to assist with the working bees.

ANZAC Services – Thank you to all our students and families who participate in our school and community ANZAC services. We are so proud of how you represented Kingaroy State School and the respect and gratitude you showed towards those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. A special mention must be made of our School Captains, Kimi and Eden, who spoke beautifully in front of a large crowd during the town service. Thank you so much to Mrs Leanne Broadbent for all the hard work and organisation she put into our school and town services.

ANZAC Day
A very BIG THANK YOU to our school. Their behaviour was very respectful and thoughtful during our ANZAC service.
Our invited speaker was Mr Alec Berry, who spoke about some of the different conflicts Australia has been involved in. Our Year 4 speakers (Scarlett, Damon, Izabell, Isabel, Kooper, Rubee, Stella) taught us about some of the symbols used for ANZAC Day. Mackenzie Daniells & Lucas Scott recited the poem a Sonnet to ANZAC Day. All of these students spoke clearly and have worked hard to be able to read these so well on the day. Thank you for your hard work.
Mrs Danielle Carige conducted our Kingaroy State School Senior Choir, who performed a song called Spirit of the Anzacs. Mr Larry Cann accompanied them on the guitar. Our Instrumental School Band played the National Anthem and Abide with Me. It is wonderful to see the musical talent in our school and their willingness to share with us. They did a great job.
Mr Thomas Town, a Kingaroy High School student, played The Last Post and Reveille for our service. Thank you for making our service so special.
When reading this I hope I have got the message to those who took part in these events. You all gave your best and made me proud of your actions and the work you did. Thank you from Mrs BB.
On Tuesday the school also marched in the town ANZAC March. Another BIG THANK you to the very large number of Students, Parents and Staff who took the time to be part of this special event.
Sonnet to ANZAC Day
Sound the Last Post again, lest we forget
the freedom that we cherish has been bought -
not found like mushrooms in the field; the debt
is ours to pay, mindful of those who fought
and fell - yet still they held the torch aloft!
May we remain as zealous to withstand
the traitors who would make our fibres soft,
as well as enemies beyond the land.
The trumpet has the power to move us still,
and though the debris of a flood of years
lies over hand and mind, an aching thrill
comes rising perilously close to tears.
Sound the Last Post to hold the memory bright,
then sound the Rouse and keep the torch alight.

Symbols of Commemoration
Poppy - One of the most recognisable commemorative symbols. During the First World War, red poppies grew abundantly in the battlefields of Northern France and Belgium. Since 1921 poppies have been sold to raise money for veterans, are worn on Remembrance Day, placed on honour rolls and added to Anzac Day Wreaths.
Wreath - In ancient Roman times wreaths of laurel were used to crown victors as a symbol of bravery, honour and strength. In ancient Greece evergreen wreaths symbolised eternal life. In more recent years, wreaths have been laid on graves and memorials in memory of the dead.
Medals - Medals are awarded to members of the Australian Defence Force for their service or actions during war, conflict or peacekeeping operations. Veterans often wear their medals to a commemorative event, such as an Anzac Day or Remembrance Day ceremony. Veterans wear their medals on the left side of their chest. A family member of a veteran may wear their relative's medals on the right side.
Memorials - Memorials provide a place for people to gather and remember those Australian men and women from the local community who are currently or who have previously served in the Australian Defence Force. People gather at these memorials, especially for events such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.
Rosemary - Since ancient times, rosemary has been associated with improving memory and was used as a symbol of fidelity and remembrance. For Australians, rosemary is significant as it grew wild on the Gallipoli peninsula during the First World War. Sprigs of rosemary are worn as a symbol of remembrance, particularly on Anzac Day.
The Last Post - In the military, the Last Post was traditionally played on the bugle to signify the end to a day’s activities. The Last Post is also played at commemorative services and military funerals as a final farewell and to signify that those who have died can now rest in peace.
One Minute’s Silence - This is a time to reflect and remember all those people who have lost their lives in war, conflict or peacekeeping operations. The One Minute’s Silence has been part of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies for over 100 years.
