Issue 6 28 April 2021
From the Principal's Desk
Welcome back
A warm welcome back to all our new and returning students. It has been an extremely positive start to the new term, with all classes settling into their routines smoothly.
ANZAC Day March
Thank you to all the students who gave up their Sunday morning last weekend to participate in the community ANZAC Day march. This is a very important event and it was great to see so many students wearing their uniforms and proudly representing our school.
NAPLAN
Every year across Australia all students in years 3 & 5 participate in the NAPLAN tests. These tests are happening in week 4 of this term, May 11-14. If you would like your child to be withdrawn from sitting NAPLAN tests this year please contact their classroom teacher asap.
Change to Report Card timelines – Semester 1
A reminder to all our families that following consultation with our P&C and staff, this semester we will be trialling new timelines for our report cards. Previously Semester 1 report cards have gone home in Week 10 of Term 2. We are trialling sending them home early in Term 3. This will allow several weeks longer for teachers to complete units of work, which will hopefully result in improved student achievement. This change will align us to Kingaroy State High School, who also send Semester 1 report cards home early in Term 3.
Vandalism
Unfortunately, our school grounds were vandalised over the Easter Break. When money is spent repairing damage caused by vandals it means that less money is able to be spent on resources and staff to support student learning. Our community can help to keep our school grounds safe. If you see or hear any damage after-hours or on the weekends please report this immediately to the Queensland Police or call School Watch.
Staffing
Mrs Danielle Carige has been appointed as Acting Principal of Morven State School for Terms 2 & 3. I would like to congratulate her on this appointment. She is being replaced by Ms Kate Ireland. I would like to warmly welcome Kate Ireland to the Kingaroy State School team.
P&C Meeting – Wednesday 12th May
It was great to see so many new faces at our last P&C meeting. The more people and families that we have involved with our P&C the more successful it will be. Our next P&C meeting is being held on Wednesday 12th March at 6pm in the school’s Library.

SHINE
SHINE is a process that we use throught Kingaroy State School, whether it be in a classroom, on Parade or on the Senior Stage. It is a great way of gaining student's attention and reminding them about what it means to be respectful to the person speaking, no matter who that is.
Classroom News- 1B
Welcome to 1B!
What a fantastic place Kingaroy State School is in which to work, learn and celebrate! I cannot believe that one week has already passed in Term 2.
Year 1 students are enjoying learning about animal characters in texts:
This term in English, 1B students are looking at texts with animal characters in order to explore how they reflect human qualities. At the completion of this unit, Year One students will create an animal character to be included in the ‘Willy’ series written by Anthony Browne. Students will then discuss their choices in an interview.
Last week, students looked at the first story in the series: “Willy the Wimp”. The text was used for various other learning opportunities, not only did we discuss human qualities but we also went on a “Sight Word Hunt” (we found our weekly sight words in the text – it, some, they), discussed Tier 2 vocabulary words (e.g. proud), wrote simple sentences (ensuring that we used capital letters at the start of the sentence and for proper nouns and a full a stop at the end of our sentence) and drew pictures to match.
Supporting Literacy in 1B:
From letters, sounds and concepts of print to phonemic awareness, phonological awareness and phonics. From sight words to comprehension and fluency. Reading and being literate is multi-faceted and as individual as each of us. Reading is at the core of being literate and being able to communicate effectively.
In 1B, students’ literacy development is supported through our whole-school approach of reading groups. The term started strong and we formed our Term 2 reading groups right away. Students were excited to get back into it, and were very familiar with our routine even after a two-week break. Students read texts at their level, and were able to complete different activities: vocabulary, cloze passages and comprehension questions.
While reading is integrated into our classroom, parents and carers also play a vital part in supporting 1B students when learning to read. Home readers are sent home weekly in their child’s homework folder.
Over the holiday break, 1B students were also encouraged to read as many books as they could and rate them out of 5. Those students that did this and returned the booklet on the first day of school received a reward: a PICTURE BOOK. A huge congratulations to Jailie, Zahlia and Charlotte for sharing their love of reading.
Friday – Computer Lab Visits:
On Friday afternoons, we visit the school’s computer lab to give Year One students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with hardware and software as well as access the exciting online reading program for kids: ABC Reading Eggs. Students have been learning how to sign-in (simultaneously press Ctrl-Alt-Del and type their username and password, which requires students to change one letter to a capital letter), open Internet Explorer, click Favourites to open ABC Reading Eggs and then enter a different username / password in order to open the online reading program. We are very lucky to have Mrs Miller and 4 Year Six students each week assisting during this time. Teamwork does make the dream work!
Have a wonderful week KSS!
Kind regards,
Miss Kayla Bailey
